Zwift's new $15/month price is really making me think twice about renewing this winter, so I'm checking out this new free competitor
https://www.rgtcycling.com/
You connect your power meter to the phone app, then connect the app to a screen app on a desktop or AppleTV.
Seems to work really well on my PC laptop, was only getting 5 fps on my old Mac mini though. Doesn't have all the features of Zwift but it's free and it's just something to distract me from boring indoor riding (doing TrainerRoad base plan again) and looks just as good...
Anyone else using RGT?
Skye ^ CLICK TO REPLY

This is quite incredible, the Canyon/Sram Women's Team (you know, the ones with the jerseys that everyone wants) is holding try-outs on Zwift for their 2017 team. It was announced during the TDU Ride-Along hosted by Canyon/Sram pro rider Tiffany Cromwell. More details below:
New Canyon//SRAM team to use Zwift to recruit new team rider
Do you have what it takes to join the new Canyon//SRAM women’s team in 2017? There’s no need to sharpen your CV, though, all you need to do is get on Zwift and demonstrate your potential.
The search for the new recruit through the popular Zwift virtual reality training website will begin in March 2016, with female amateur riders from around the world invited to try-out.
Ronny Lauke is the Canyon//SRAM team director. "The world is full of young cyclists with raw talent that we may not be noticing,” he adds. “That’s a huge problem for the sport and we want to challenge this as much as possible. Of course, there are other criteria to becoming a pro cyclist, like attitude, bike handling and a good tactical brain, but without an exceptional engine you won’t get too far! This is going to be an exciting adventure with Zwift." ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Zwift Riders Forum: Setting up Zwift from iMac in another room

Hi,
I'm keen to get using Zwift but unfortunately my work laptop is blocked from using the software so my best option (to save shelling out on a home laptop/desktop only for Zwift!) is to somehow connect my iMac which is in another room 10-15 metres away to a screen in my garage. I know its possible from dcrainmaker's post on the topic but three questions:
1. Will an Ant+ dongle plugged into the mac 15 metres away pick up the trainer, HRM etc.? (trainer is Tacx Vortex Smart)
2. How to connect the remote screen (will probably buy a new tv for this purpose)? I know Apple TV is an option but I already have one in use elsewhere. Also, my home wifi signal is poor in the garage.
3. Any way to avoid the imac displaying Zwift whilst I'm training in the garage? (family may get fed up of watching my rides whilst they have breakfast!)
Thanks in advance,
Stu ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Zwift Riders Forum: How to organize a Zwift group ride or race

I've received some questions about how to organize a new Zwift group ride or race, so I thought I'd put together this guide based on my (admittedly limited) experience. Please leave any suggestions or comments below!
How to organize a Zwift group ride or race
At the time of writing (January 2016) there are no formal features in Zwift for organizing or hosting group rides or races, so what I suggest here are just the "best practices" that I've seen used by others. There have been plenty of hints dropped that Zwift is working on features to support group rides and races, so this could change at any time.
1. Pick a time and ride name
If your group ride or race is open to anyone around the world, think about time zone issues and when people might be available to participate, when they aren't sleeping or working. You may also want to pick a time when there isn't another event happening, as there is just one big "group chat" in the Zwift world currently, to reduce confusion. You can view the Zwift calendar here for any time zone and see what's already scheduled:
Zwift group rides & races calendar
And here's a handy World Clock Tool for comparing time zones.
You should pick a name that isn't too long, and if you want riders to add the ride name to their in-game names, it should have a short, clear abbreviation (eg: Zwift Training Race or ZTR). The name should reflect the kind of event (race, group ride, training, etc)
The day & time you choose will determine what course you will be on - you can't pick your course, at least not yet. Here's the current calendar:
https://support.zwift.com/hc/en-us/articles/207027316-Course-Schedule-for-January-1-16-
2. Determine the fitness level required
You should specify the required fitness level of participants in watts per kg (w/kg), which is shown in-game in the rider list on the right hand side of the screen if you're not familiar with that unit of measurement.
Nobody likes getting dropped, or being bored, so it's better to specify what's expected from the beginning.
If/when your event is popular enough, consider splitting it into A/B and C/D groups based on rider FTP.
2.0 W/kg is an effort level that almost any rider can maintain for an hour.
3. Pick your ride leader(s)
Leading a group ride or race isn't easy, but it can be very rewarding. Your leader should know how to use the group chat function well while riding (typing on a laptop while riding, if you have an appropriate desk setup, is much better than trying to use the mobile app). The leader should announce the start and post reminders about the start area, direction, and duration at 5 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute intervals. If you're hosting a popular race with split A/B and C/D (or more) categories, each group or combined group should have it's own leader, with staggered start times. It's a good idea to have the leader wear an unusual, brightly coloured kit (eg the Flouro 2 hot pink & blue jersey) for max visibility in the pack.
If you're hosting a group ride with a specified target power (eg: the TGIF ride at 2 W/kg) then having a leader with a smart trainer set in "Erg" mode to that specific power target makes things much more consistent as a reference for other riders, and also frees up the leader to manage the ride. If you're hosting a group ride with a no-drop policy, consider also having a "sweep" to help motivate and draft anyone that is struggling to avoid being dropped.
If you're hosting a race, keep in mind that controlling any neutralized sections will require almost constant reminders to those that are chomping at the bit to be first to the race start to stay behind the leader. Likewise, in group rides with target power, some more fit riders will go off the front and break the group up. If you want the group to stay together, it will take lots of group message reminders.
The leader should be fit enough to handle all these tasks while also riding!
4. Add your event to the Zwift Calendar on Teamup
Is your event a one-off or recurring? If it's a one-off and just between a few friends, then you probably don't need or want to promote it. However if it's a recurring event, or if you want to encourage more participation, you should add it to the Zwift Calendar on Teamup here:
Zwift Calendar on Teamup
* Note that anyone used to be able to add or modify events on Teamup, but it appears it's so popular now that you have to gain access to the calendar by joining the Facebook group Zwift Rides Calendar Access and following their instructions.
You should include all of the info you've decided above, plus the following information in your event description (more info).

Name of your ride or race

Course, number of laps, start point, and direction

Leader(s) names and kit

The goal for each lap, if applicable

Naming (eg ZTR-A) and jersey requirements (eg Basic 3), if applicable

The neutral zone or start procedure, if applicable

NEW: The profile of the ride (flat, hilly, follow the leader)

Teamspeak address and channel, if applicable

It's a good idea to look at the information in the existing rides calendar to get an idea of what you should include.

Short link https://staminist.com/zwiftorg
^ CLICK TO REPLY

I love the graphics on the new "Ocean Bvld" course in Watopia, the underwater tube is cool, and I love the huge trees in "Jurassic Park" and even the dust on the gravel section by the marina!
But I like the hills too - I find a totally flat course kind of boring, especially as short steep hills are a great reminder to stand (riding the stationary trainer for hours always makes me a bit numb), and provide a great place to attack when the drafting effect is lower for the wheel suckers.
What do you think of the new expansion? Looks like there's a "mountain course" coming soon - there's a billboard to that effect in the Jurassic Park section between the underwater tubes. ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Zwift Riders Forum: Do you fuel during Zwift races?

I'm trying some Zwift racing and curious if people bother fueling during races?
Or just stick to water? Water with electrolytes? Sports drinks?
I guess any advice for criterium racing would be applicable in this case too, which generally seems to mean:
1. You don't need to eat during a race that's under an hour
2. Pre-hydrate and stay hydrated (the in-game avatars drinking are a great reminder)
3. Eat beforehand, but don't overdo it. You don't want an upset stomach when the hammer drops.
Of course, it's taking me longer than an hour to finish these races at my current pace, and today I definitely noticed I hit a wall around the hour mark - as you can see in my chart below, where my power kept dropping the longer I rode. Next time I'll keep a fruit bar or something very easily digestible on hand for that 3rd lap, or mix up a sports drink and sip on that. At least on the turbo, carrying two bottles isn't any disadvantage! ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Zwift Riders Forum: Zwift graphics & hardware survey

Lots of people are interested in running Zwift in 1080p in High or Ultra graphics mode but not sure what hardware they need. I recently bought a new (well, used) gaming laptop and I have to say, the virtual cycling experience is definitely better with improved graphics!
Post your computer specs and Zwift graphics performance below!
Please include the following information so the results can be compared:
* Computer/laptop manufacturer and model name
* CPU model and system memory
* GPU model and graphics memory
* Average FPS under normal riding conditions, or FPS range (ie empty course vs riding in a big group)
* Optional: Include a photo of your virtual cycling setup (aka pain cave)
* Optional: 3DMark Basic (free version) benchmark results Download here
For consistency, please report FPS at 1080p (1920x1080) resolution, with Zwift settings on High, full screen, camera view 1
To measure frames per second (fps) install the free FRAPS tool which will show a FPS overlay
Unfortunately, Fraps is Windows only (works fine on Win8 & Win10) - for Mac instructions, see below.
Most games have a console where you can show FPS on the screen, unfortunately Zwift doesn't have this feature (yet)
In Watopia, the FPS seem to be lowest when approaching the bridge underpass just after the Start line, and of course the more riders you can see, the lower the FPS (eg in a large group ride or race). Post the min & max FPS you see when riding.
Not sure what CPU you have? Windows: Use CPU-Z Mac: Apple menu -> About This Mac
Not sure what GPU you have? Windows: Use GPU-Z Mac: Apple menu -> About This Mac
Note that for many gaming laptops, they will have TWO graphics adapters for power savings - one low powered adapter for normal computing tasks and a high powered, dedicated GPU for gaming. Please post the GPU details, as that's what should be running Zwift.
Measuring FPS on a Mac: After doing your ride, open a Terminal window and type the following:

grep FPS ~/Documents/Zwift/Logs/Log.txt

Zwift periodically posts the current FPS to it's log file, so you can see some numbers from various times in the log file via this method. The log file exists in Windows as well, but I prefer using Fraps to measure FPS on that platform.

Short link http://stamini.st/zwiftgpu
^ CLICK TO REPLY

Zwift Riders Forum: Zwift group ride features coming

This just in from the CEO of Zwift commenting on a topic in the Zwift Riders Facebook group...
"More tweaks to drafting coming very soon. Some support for events is coming soon after the holidays. We recognize how important this is already"
Will the "events support" just mean a built in calendar, or the ability to join/leave group rides and races with designated leaders?
Guessing that after the holidays means after Christmas and New Years.
The group rides definitely need a neutralization feature sooner rather than later, as there are lots of people fed up with being dropped from group rides that are advertised as being far lower w/kg than what actually happens. A few heroes go off the front, the leader follows them, and the group is blown apart on the first lap - unless the group has a very strong, vocal leader that keeps everyone reined in.
Drafting fixes will be very welcome, the last update made it very difficult to pass riders once you're in their draft. Not very realistic, and far too much advantage for those drafting - which makes it very difficult to catch up if you get dropped off the back for whatever reason. ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Wondering what the Watopia looks like from the sky? Zwift rider Rich Lovelock spent some time in the "TV helicopter" getting these great shots of the island, makes you want to jump on the bike and go for a virtual ride doesn't it?
"Spent an hour or so in bed this morning marvelling at what Zwift developers have achieved with Watopia and trying to get a feel for the overall map/course! It's pretty amazing. Guess many have had a snoop around but thought I'd share a few pics for those who might appreciate them. Couple of thoughts...
1. Has anybody noticed the random section of dysfunctional road near the ferris wheel in photo 1!?
2. Was trying to figure out some of closest places on 'real earth' to ride something like Watopia. Closest I can come up with is something like Lofoten Islands in Norway (the last pics and hoping to visit next year). Anybody seen something like real life Watopia?" ^ CLICK TO REPLY

A lot of new Zwift riders seem to ask the same questions, so I've tried to compile some of the common answers in this post. This will be continually updated as I gather more questions! Thanks and ride on!

How do I choose which course to race?
You can't, currently. You either ride Watopia or Richmond depending on the day of the week. The course schedule is here:
https://support.zwift.com/hc/en-us/articles/207027316-Course-Schedule-for-January-1-16-
How do I find/join a group ride or race?
Check the Zwift Event Calendar and read the instructions for the event. The event info usually includes the watts/kg you'll have to maintain to keep up, the number of laps, naming/tagging requirements, which direction and where to start, leader, and any jersey requirements for the group.
https://staminist.com/zwiftcal
How do I turn around/ride in reverse?
Press the down key on your keyboard, or press and hold the U-turn button on the mobile app.
How do I change my name (eg for a group ride)?
You can edit your name by stopping riding to get the Pause screen in game, or by clicking the return arrow in the bottom-left hand corner. Click on the pencil to edit your name. You can also change your name from your Zwift dashboard.
Please note that you will need to log out & log in again to see your changed name in the game. Hopefully this bug will be fixed soon.
Where can I find a list of the workouts that are currently available?
Check out the Zwift Beta Workouts List at stronglikeox
How do I upload Zwift activities to Training Peaks / Golden Cheetah / Cycling Analytics / etc?
Zwift stores a record of all your rides in Garmin .FIT format in the My Documents\Zwift\Activities folder on PC, or ~/Documents/Zwift/Activities folder on Mac. You can upload the .FIT file to almost any fitness or training tracking service.
You can also download the .FIT files for your activities from your Zwift dashboard.
How do I set up Zwift and TrainerRoad to run at the same time?
Watch the following video for instructions.
Please note that the video shows two 30-pin iPhone Ant+ dongles, but what you need is two USB Ant+ dongles.
Basically, you use TrainerRoad's "Trainer Relay" feature to re-broadcast your power data to Zwift.
I recommend the Suunto Movestick Mini USB Ant+ adapter, it's worked flawlessly on my PCs, Macs, and with every Ant+ device I own.
