RGT Cycling is working out pretty well, the iOS controller app on my phone seems to crash/freeze on pretty much every ride when I wake up my phone to end the ride but recovers the data when I restart. The RGT Screen app on my Windows laptop is stable and looks great.
Not too many riders, but plenty of NPC riders around to keep it lively. Like I said before, this is just some visual distraction for my TrainerRoad workouts so I don't really care that it's missing all the social Zwift stuff. I don't think Zwift is that great for structured training, to be honest - I always get caught up going for PRs or racing other riders.
Skye ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Zwift's new $15/month price is really making me think twice about renewing this winter, so I'm checking out this new free competitor
https://www.rgtcycling.com/
You connect your power meter to the phone app, then connect the app to a screen app on a desktop or AppleTV.
Seems to work really well on my PC laptop, was only getting 5 fps on my old Mac mini though. Doesn't have all the features of Zwift but it's free and it's just something to distract me from boring indoor riding (doing TrainerRoad base plan again) and looks just as good...
Anyone else using RGT?
Skye ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Apparently it does matter - quite a lot in fact!
From a post on the Zwift Blog Zwift Weight/Watt/Equipment Speed Tests
"Equipment does matter–especially wheels! The Zipp 808’s (the level 10 unlock) are 19 seconds faster over a full Richmond lap than the “stock” 32mm carbon wheels. The fastest bike available to all riders (other than the TT bike) is the Cervelo S5, which is 11 seconds faster over a full Richmond lap than the stock Zwift Carbon.
The difference between the stock setup (Zwift Carbon and 32mm carbon wheels) and the fastest race-legal setup (Cervelo S5 and Zipp 808’s) is 33 seconds per Richmond lap, or approximately 70 seconds per hour."
There's a lot of other observations about rider height and weight on that page that are quite interesting - such as the fact that since you can't upgrade the wheels, the much-coveted Tron bike isn't really that fast. I guess I'll be sticking to the Zipp 808's and the S-Works frame for races or any other time where speed matters. ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Other than the road/TT bike differences, does bike choice have any effect in Zwift as far as weight or aero drag?
What about wheels? I like the way the classic bike and rims combo looks, but not sure if it's slowing me down.
Thanks ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Thanks for the info Andy. It's the responsibility of the ride organizers to update the event listing with any changes, but it sometimes they forget.
It's best to keep an eye out for announcements from the ride leader via the group chat before the start, they should announce the intended route, as well as keeping an eye on the group's turn indicators for the first few corners. It's especially problematic on the Richmond course where you can't make a U-turn.
Ultimately, I hope Zwift creates some better group ride & race features built into the world itself, so this won't be an issue anymore. There are a lot of things that could be improved (route selection, making leaders more visible, private/empty course, race neutralizing, w/kg limits, etc etc). Some hints have been dropped that they're working on it, but who knows when it will be ready. ^ CLICK TO REPLY

HI Skye,
Great site - thanks. Quick note on the ARR Saturday ride. Seems there are two rides - or at least a Flat or UCI course. I sailed on past the turn on the first lap and never saw them again. Fortunately so did Jensie, so kind of cool, but might be worth mentioning.
Cheers
Andy Bell ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Loving the new workout editor. I've been creating quite a few FTP Build workouts featuring FTP over/under intervals and longer Sweet Spot rides.
Thinking about creating an online database of workouts for people to upload and share, but not sure if Zwift has something like that in the works (I think I heard that they do)... don't want to duplicate effort. Would be really nice to calculate what the TSS is for various workouts, though. ^ CLICK TO REPLY

This is quite incredible, the Canyon/Sram Women's Team (you know, the ones with the jerseys that everyone wants) is holding try-outs on Zwift for their 2017 team. It was announced during the TDU Ride-Along hosted by Canyon/Sram pro rider Tiffany Cromwell. More details below:
New Canyon//SRAM team to use Zwift to recruit new team rider
Do you have what it takes to join the new Canyon//SRAM women’s team in 2017? There’s no need to sharpen your CV, though, all you need to do is get on Zwift and demonstrate your potential.
The search for the new recruit through the popular Zwift virtual reality training website will begin in March 2016, with female amateur riders from around the world invited to try-out.
Ronny Lauke is the Canyon//SRAM team director. "The world is full of young cyclists with raw talent that we may not be noticing,” he adds. “That’s a huge problem for the sport and we want to challenge this as much as possible. Of course, there are other criteria to becoming a pro cyclist, like attitude, bike handling and a good tactical brain, but without an exceptional engine you won’t get too far! This is going to be an exciting adventure with Zwift." ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Comparing riders using watts per kilogram (w/kg) should be a basis for equal comparison.
For example, leaving aside aerodynamic considerations, a 100 kg rider riding up a hill at 400 watts will climb at exactly the same rate as a 50 kg rider riding at 200 watts - both are riding at 4 w/kg.
For the group rides and races categories, the watts per kg range is based on your measured FTP (Functional Threshold Power, or max average power you can sustain for a solid 60 minutes). You then divide your FTP power in watts by your current weight to find your FTP in w/kg.
Here's a good article describing FTP and how to measure it: FTP Testing - The Cornerstone of Training
There are several FTP test protocols available in Zwift's "Workout Mode" when you first log in.

Quote
MvVreeswijk
A question on how to determine which Groupride to join. For example 3 to 3.5 w/kg. So the weight is what matters? My weight is 72 kg but someone who is 85 kg goes a lot faster and leaves me gasping for breath...

^ CLICK TO REPLY
