Marathon to Half Iron Man in 2 months - suggestions

Dear all,
I am signed up to my second marathon on the 8th of April and my first ever half ironman on the 17th of June. To answer questions of fitness/experience, this marathon I'm aiming for around 3h30 mark. This will be my first triathlon of any kind, but I am a pretty competent swimmer. Currently on a training programme (bupa advanced marathon programme) of 5/6 runs per week for the marathon but this doesn't involve any swimming. I cycle every day about 5 miles to go in/out of work, so cycling is the least of my worries (I have completed cycling holidays of around 70 miles a day max so have experienced of longer cycling).
Any tips for the transition to the half iron man training, whether I should implement some swimming earlier into my marathon programme for the steadier runs.. any tips for a programme, any particular sessions, a good way to transition, etc.
Thanks everyone!! ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Class discussion - "what is endurance?"

Hello,
I'm an instructor for a college level introductory class to endurance coaching. I'm planning to create a small groups discussion about endurance. I'm hoping to create a student sense about what is endurance and the large spectrum of endurance. I have come up with a few thought provoking questions for this intro level class, but I would appreciate if there are any questions you can add and inspire???
Example questions:
• Come up with the largest vocabulary of words/phrases you can associate with endurance? (pushing through, survival, stamina…)
• Is endurance more of a physiological or mental capacity? pick a side and argue for/against
• How would you measure endurance? Is that "measure" valid across the whole spectrum of endurance sports?
• How do you best define endurance?
Thank you! ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Hello, I've just come across this. I use microcirculation therapy called deoxyhemoglobin vasodilator. Used it to improve my endurance when i run and for my workout (although I dread working out lol). Noticed significant changes and also, my skin seems... better. ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Woundcare has the most visible effect (and Spider Veins) because patients don't feel anything while being administered deoxyhemoglobin vasodilator. Because it increases your blood flow immediately, I started using it to literally recover from a car accident I was in. I use it for pain, recovery/sleep and energy. Imagine a hyperbaric chamber but way more focused and portable and affordable....athletes are totally catching on to this because of the science behind improving your microcirculation; profound because it affects everything...check out the 30 second YouTube videos on D'Oxyva ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Interesting, might be something to look into. A quick search turned up the following article
Transdermal CO2 application in chronic wounds
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15866797
"There was clinical evidence of improvement of granulation and reduction of discharge and malodor within 1 week of treatment in both chronic and acute wounds. Only 9 patients, all diabetics, needed an additional systemic antibiosis. The treatment was well tolerated. No adverse effects have been noted."
Anything that would heal up road rash faster would be great!
I'm not sure if any of this is particularly applicable to pain perception in endurance athletes, though (which is what this topic is about)
Skye ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Cross Training Heart Rate Zones

Question from a reader - "I will have to travel for a week without my bike. I intend to run three or four times this week. Can I use the same heart rate values I use for cycling for the run and send it to Training Peaks?"
While I am not familiar with this particular training program, I can comment on the question of transferability of heart rate training zones (or HR training goals) between running and cycling. Numerous studies in triathletes help answer the question.
The specific article that answers the question (linked below) is fairly technical (physiologic terminology and abbreviations) but concludes that HR based training zones CANNOT be translated from cycling to running. "...From the results of this study, it is recommended that the triathlete perform sport-specific testing to assess training zones for cycling and running."
Transferability of running and cycling training zones in triathletes: implications for steady-state exercise
It then goes on to suggest that measuring watts of output as a training tool is preferable to HR. "... For this reason, monitoring wattage during steady-state exercise may be more appropriate than monitoring HR and RR." ^ CLICK TO REPLY

Published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, researchers tested a group of cyclists doing sprint intervals with a placebo or a small dose of of acetaminophen. They then monitored their power output and heart rate during each sprint, and the group that took acetaminophen had a significantly greater power output. The conclusion? The findings "support the notion that exercise is regulated by pain perception, and increased pain tolerance can improve exercise capacity."
Perception is the key word here, and you can train yourself to have a higher pain threshold, by scheduling practice races, high intensity interval training, and recovery to build up your mental toughness reserves.
NSAIDs should only be used when necessary! See this related topic: Taking ibuprofen before running
"Athletes who'd popped ibuprofen pills before and during an event displayed significantly more inflammation and other markers of high immune system response afterward than those who hadn't taken anti-inflammatories.

Great article for total Tri newbies by Triathlon Magazine Canada on how to get started in the sport.
I'm a terrible swimmer, but it sounds like something I could even do with a little training.
http://triathlonmagazine.ca/racing/first-sprint-triathlon/
"These shorter races will typically consist of a 500 to 750 m swim, 20 to 25 km bike and a 3 to 6 km run. They are held by themselves or are staged in conjunction with the longer distance races. To encourage participation, many early season races will begin indoors with a pool swim.
The wonderful thing about a sprint distance is that anyone with minimal athletic background can complete it with four to six weeks of preparation, pro viding one can initially swim 50 m, ride a bike around the block, and walk a few 100 m." ^ CLICK TO REPLY
