Wheel Wars: 26 vs 27.5/650b vs 29er

The arguments for going to a 29er seem reasonable (rolls better, more traction vs slightly weaker, more rotational mass)
Now I see there are 27.5" aka 650b bikes too. Is this just a plot to sell more product?
Of course, if you're buying a new MTB, you can choose anything you want and it doesn't really make a difference. But if you already have a lot of spares, or you're looking at the used market, there is WAY more selection for 26" spares and gear.
What do you ride for getting up & down the hills? Are the new sizes pure marketing BS or worth the hype?
In the end, just get out there and ride what you've got!!

Is 29" really too big? This was from 2012 so if "it will be decided within 5 years" we should almost be there already.
It does kind of seem like 650b is pretty popular now, maybe it does hit that sweet spot
